You must know shell programming if you want to fire your own maintenance scripts and/or if your shop won't invest in spendy monitor tools that actually work ! And if you end up helping developers with their shell scripts, or in my case, writing the scripts for them...

I have to understand the basics of the OS so that when stuff blows up I can tell whether or not it's a systems problem or if it's truly my problem. Believe me if I wake the sysadmins when I didn't need to I'd have my head handed to me. I don't know much Unix. I just know enough to be dangerous.
