Which manual did you refer to? Alter tablespace begin backup command only
'prepares' the datafiles in the tablespace for 'hot' (online) backup. YOU
still have to copy the files.
This is all explained in the 'Backup & Recovery Guide'. Look in the chapter
that talks about 'Performing Operating System Backups'...
