Hi Lisa,
Yes, Oracle formats all the blocks.

My large db that I hosed yesterday has 6 properly sized tablespaces - ~8GB each. We are using Veritas quick i/o on Solaris 2.6, E10000 domain. Still, one create tablespace statement, with all 4 2GB datafiles in the datafile clause with reuse, takes about 15 minutes. This is no wimp machine and right now it's at my disposal.
Does creating a tablespace with large datafiles always take this long? I'm curious what Oracle is doing in the background - is it formatting the blocks to it's liking? Scanning everything? Any insights are appreciated.
Thanks
Lisa
