Oracle SQL*PLUS by J. Gennick suggests the following in login.sql
SET TERMOUT OFF
COLUMN dbname NEW_VALUE prompt_dbname
SELECT SUBSTR(global_name,1,INSTR(global_name, '.')-1) dbname
FROM global_name;
SET SQLPROMPT "&&prompt_dbname> "
SET TERMOUT ON
This assumes, different names for dbs, of course.
pg 392-3 in case I have a typo.
Caveat 1: Prompt will not change if you CONNECT to another database from SQLPLUS. Caveat 2: I've found it has a bad effect on scripts using calls to sqlplus.
Perhaps a safer answer would be to shell script all such changes where you can see ORACLE_SIDs being set.

How many of you have ever dropped a table, or done something like that in the wrong database(thinking you were connected to say the test DB), and hosed production? Steve BoydLists
