In my opinion, the "How to stop defragmenting ..." paper goes too far in its rejection of the single extent myth. There are several reasons why hundreds of extents are bad news. Have a look at my web tip on "Planning Extents" for details.

Does anyone know where I can get the whitepaper that discusses the issue of whether or not having multiple extents is a good or bad thing? I saw a post from November that said where to find it but the document is not there.
