Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Getting a new machine
Actually.....................I am talking about a server with a functionalOracle instance on it.
The hardware guys and the UNIX system administrators tell me that they can
to the
unplug/replug thing without affecting the OS or any flat files.
When I hear that, I am thinking that Oracle would be OK also.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your reply.

Your talking about getting rid of the box that has the Oracle software on
it, right? I would venture that that experiment would work. Unplug the
old
sun box, plug in the new one, load the Oracle software.
As long as you don't have any datafiles, control files, redo logs AND you change anything in the INIT.ora file so that BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST, etc points to any new names of partitions you might have changed with this new box.
Of course, I'm no expert and you should checked with Oracle. But it sounds good, COLD BACKUPS.... ;) If you have that you can play all you want! hehe
Good luck

We are currently running Oracle 7.3.4.4 on a Sun-2000 attached to an EMC disk array.
Does anybody know if it is possible to upgrade to a completely new server (Sun-6500) by just unplugging the 2000 and plugging in the 6500?
Thanks.
