If you have your temporary tablespace set as type temp (which you should)
then old segments don't get cleaned up, they stay there to be reused by
later sorts (thereby saving the time it would have taken to create a new
extent).

Subject: temporary segment
Hi
Running Oracle 8.0.5 on NT. There was an export running as system, which
hung (should have taken 40 mins and was still going 12 hours later!). I
killed the session, but it is still being shown in top sessions (as killed),
and there is a temporary segment in the temp tablespace which hasn't been
cleaned up. It has been sitting there for the last 48hours.
