If it has been a while since you have rebuilt your indexes (which is something I need to do soon) and you have had a lot of updates and deletes to the indexes, you will have a lot of dead holes in your indexes. COMPRESS=Y will make the initial extent of the index the total of all the allocated extents. If you are doing the export to rebuild your database to free up space, this defeats your purpose. -----Original Message----- From: George.Brennan@warnermusic.com [mailto:George.Brennan@warnermusic.com] Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 7:44 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Subject: RE: Tablespace reorg tools > Deepak, > > I believe COMPRESS=Y will resize the initial extent, but the next > extent will remain the same size. Indexes is one example.  If it has been a while = since you have rebuilt your indexes (which is something I need to do = soon) and you have had a lot of updates and deletes to the indexes, you = will have a lot of dead holes in your indexes.  COMPRESS=3DY will = make the initial extent of the index the total of all the allocated = extents.  If you are doing the export to rebuild your database to = free up space, this defeats your purpose.
