Is example tablespace os any particular importance?
can idrop it to free up space?

It is an example tablespace if while you creating database by dbca select install sample schema. See the contents of this tablespace and decide you will drop or not. If you don't do anything in it then it is safe to delete it.

It is safe to drop it if you don't use examples and didn't put in it some of your objects.
So just query dba_segments.
