Hi All,

I am getting an opportunity to work as an Oracle DBA Level -1 support in a reputed MNC.

I do not have any prior DBA experience, would highly appreciate if anybody can explain being a Level-1 DBA support what will be my daily duties.

Also kindly explain what duties do the Level II and Level III DBA perform.

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
MH

An extremely interesting question and I am looking forward to hearing what the 'real' DBAs who cruise this site have to say.

I am an 'applications' programmer - that is, I create custom applications. I analyse requirements, I design database structures and I build programmable database objects and forms. I have no idea what is meant by "Oracle DBA Level -1 support". That's why I am so interested in any answers that you receive.

It seems that the rest of the community is a little bit confused too.

Even if they are not confused, they are certainly very silent.

Where I come from, Level 1 Support is the Help Desk (Call Centre). In this model Level 1 support would not typically have DBA's. In fact, you don't see a DBA until Level 3 (tech support).

I'm getting Dilbert flashbacks where PHB promoted his secretary to "Director of First Impressions" and placed her "office" in the building foyer. "ARRRGGHHHH, I'M A RECEPTIONIST".

Are we sure this job is not just Help Desk in lipstick, heels, and a dress? (think Bugs Bunny if you want to share my mental image)

Thanks for planting those images in my brain for the rest of the day, Ross Wink

What I would associate with a level 1 support DBA would be some day-to-day tasks done for end-users: reset password, maybe create a user, based on some template, monitor available space in tablespaces, etc.
The things a junior assistent DBA or a trainee would do.

Since I'm not a DBA either, and in the shops I worked I never heard of any DBA-level distinctions, this is only guessing..

At my present company all these tasks are done by Network Operation Center (NOC) operators & some homebrew webforms.

If you are unable to get the message, because seeing a cartoon distracts you too much, you will never make it to a level 2 support DBA.

@its_me,

Ross's answer is as good as you are going to get unless you are willing to go to the employment search engines and do a search on level 1, level 2, etc and then ring the agency to find out what THEY think it means. It still will probably not be what the company placing the advertisement means but as the agency won't give you the their contact details its probably as good as you will get.

Those titles DBA LEVEL I, II, III are most likely job descriptions within the company.

If you took the job without reading the job description shame on you.

@Marc,

I interpret "I am getting an opportunity to work as an Oracle DBA Level -1 support" as meaning that its_me didn't formally apply for the position and as such there was probably not a formal job description to read.

From its_me's profile he is currently in Tech Support and I expect that he has performed well and someone has offered him something that they feel he may find interesting or they have a position to fill and they want to do it internally.

There are many reasons why we end up in positions about which we had little information.

Be gentle.

You are here to reply the queries, you don't have any right to Criticize any body.

You might be having a very good exposure to the IT fied or Oracle, but let me tell you one thing you still have not become a professional and have forgotten your time when you started your career.

PS Moderators:

Guys like these should not be allowed to join such Forms, because they are here just to critisize people and make a FUN of them.

I must say SHAME on you, if you have the knowledge but afraid to share it.

I have got a reply to my question in another forum because they donot have people like Mr Marcl.

No offense meant.

Bye and take care.

MarcL has any right to criticize anybody. If you want people that just answer your questions, hire someone.

In my view MarcL never went out of line; I think you might have misinterpreted his words (or I did). I took them as a tongue-in-cheek kind of remark.
