What do you have in mind?
It's easier to "shoot" at your suggestion than come up with a list of our own, and, after all, it's your party!

I don't know what a layman is, but if your course is meant to teach the occasional user, I would not start by explaining RDBMS or ORDBMS.
Start with hands-on coding asap or people will get scared away.
Then you can always add an in-depth course (or add exits to the in-depth theory from your main pages).
Main advice: easy on the theory.
You lost my attention after the RDBMS/ORDBMS already..
