Greetings. I would like to port some simple Oracle forms apps to a pda. I don't care what pda or what OS they run. I just need something portable. Any Cell Phone or PDA is fine.

The current party line is "can't do it". Presumably becuse PDA OS(s) use some version of JAVA ME and Forms requires JAVA SE for sun plugin.

But, I have heard over the years of people who have been able to make it work. I would like to know the process. If someone has done this, please forward same.

Is it a question of loading JAVA SE on the pda?
Is it a question of installing a different OS on the pda?

Does anyone know?

Thanks, Kevin

We have used Oracle on PDA. Back-end was Oracle Lite, while front-end was developed in Visual Basic - sorry, we didn't use Oracle Forms either.

Forms "executable" is a .FMX file. In older versions, one needed the "runform" (IFRUN60.EXE) which was able to run the form on a client. Latest versions are web-oriented, so you'll need either a Database Server (DS) or an Application Server (AS) to run a form.

Is there DS or AS version for PDA? If so, you might try with it, but I doubt it can be done.

thanks for your reply.

But we know all this already. We have been developing in Oracle forms (and its predecessor) for 20 years, and have been wanting to go "mobile" for 10. We are also lazy to a degree. Knowing Oracle Forms inside and out, and having a huge system of forms applications at our disposal to exploit, we don't want to learn a new toolset if we can avoid it. We want to re-purpose our existing investment.

We have discussed this issue several times with Oracle Corp, and they have yet to give us a straight ansnwer.

The reality seems to be that it can be done, and it seems some people have infact done it, but it is not simple "install OAS and open an browser"; so we are looking for someone who has done it so they can share their experience with us.

PDA O/Ss have evolved a lot since we first attempted it, (some PDAs are ever running veriations of Unix/Linux these days), so we keep holding out hope for it.

Does anyone here know how? Thanks, Kevin

I am explaining myself poorly.

We do not want to develope forms on the pda. That makes no sense to us either.

We want to run forms on a pda via the pda web browser.

We are looking for someone who has done this. It seems to be an issue of getting java se loaded on the pda. Maybe someone knows how to do this?

Is there someone here who has run forms from a pda browser window?

Is there someone who knows how to load java se onto a pda?

The pda does not matter to us, anything portable works. We already know that tablet PCs work becase their OS already has, or will easily load java se and the sun java plugin.

Thanks, Kevin
