In what context was "critical column" used?

In computer terms, critical just means the one that is most important to that situation. This might be the one that makes a difference in a virtual private database or warehouse situation or the one that fires a trigger or the one that changes over time or the one that a filter condition is on.

In newspaper terms, it is an article that criticizes or complains about something.
