IM = instant message
OP = original poster
BTW = by the way
YOYO = you're on your own
If you search the web, there are various websites that list these abbreviations or acronyms that are commonly used. Most of it originated from text messaging or instant messaging where space and time were initially limited. They are intended for children to use to communicate with one another quickly, without having to type a lot or send a lengthy text message that may incur fees based on the length. In the adult business world, such things are generally considered unprofessional and usage is discouraged, as it is here. This is already addressed in the forum guide. It does, however, seem a bit hypocritical that some of those who constantly remind others not to use such things, still use a few themselves. Tom Kyte is well-known for making fun of anyone who uses "IM speak". Someone pointed out that he used things like AFAIK (as far as I know), so he stopped doing that. I thing he even searched his old responses and changed them.
