Delete ORAARCH folder [message #241282]

Hi,

Is it safe to delete all the files under the 'ORAARCH' folder to free up space? We are using Oracle9i as DB for our SAP BW/R3 systems and we'd like to free up space on our hard drives by deleting all the *.001 files found under the 'ORAARCH' folder. Is it safe? What's the purpose of these files anyway or the folder for that matter?

Oracle does not care about directory names.
So for it, ORAARCH is meaningless.
With such a name I think you put in it archived logs.
You can delete them when you have backed up your database.

Take care, these are really archived logs, check your log_archive% parameters.

From the init<SID>.ora file, the parameters related to log are:

*.log_archive_dest='F:\oracle\EC1\oraarch\EC1arch'
*.log_archive_start=true
*.log_buffer=1048576
*.log_checkpoint_interval=0
*.log_checkpoint_timeout=0
*.log_checkpoints_to_alert=true

If, for example, the archived logs/files under 'ORAARCH' were deleted without performing backup, what will be the consequences? What's the use of those archived logs/files?

I think you need to have a word with your DBA??

Incase of crash/recovery...Only incomplete recovery possible without these archive logs. Embarassed

Consequence: you cannot recover your database in case of media failure.
Action: take a backup as soon as possible.

Anyway, that's the thing with our systems. We are still in the process of formulating a suitable backup/recovery strategy.

For now, we will not be able to delete those archived files.

If you don't have backup and if already have deleted some files then you can delete all those who came after the ones you already deleted, you can never use them.
