A Security Rule (SR) is used to control which values within a given segment of the Accounting FlexField (AFF) the users are allowed to access.
A Cross-segment Validation Rule (CVR) is used to control which values are allowed in one segment of the AFF, based on the value used in another segment.
Some examples might help:-
You have several different companies, with different values in the Company segment of the AFF. You can build a Security Rule for each company and attach each SR to a different Responsibility.
You want all accounts with a type of Asset, Liability or Equity to use a Department code of "000" for the Balance Sheet. You want all accounts with a type of Revenue or Expenditure to use anything other than "000". You can build a Cross-segment Validation Rule to control this and attach it to all Responsibilities.
Additional information:-
SR's ure used when the user tries to enquire on or change existing Code Combinations, or add new ones. If the user enters a Code Combination that would break the SR, they will receive an error message and will not be able to continue until the confliect has been resolved.
CVR's only effect the creation of new Code Combinations. If anybody tries to do something that would result in the creation of a Code Combination that would break the CVR, they will receive an error message and will not be able to continue until the confliect has been resolved. If a Code Combination already exists, which breaks the CVR, then the CVR has no effect. There is a utility report which identifies all existing Code Combinations that break the CVR's; you can then journal out any postings and end-date those Code Combinations.
