I am trying to do a full database export and when i give the username it say dont have DBA privilge(EXP-00023: must be a DBA)
but when i try giving username sys it starts the export but stops within few seconds giving error EXP-00008: ORACLE error 904 encountered.
Is it good idea to do an exp using user SYS,as at some places its mentioned one should not user SYS

Do you try to export with a previous version exp or the current version?
Did you previously run $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catexp.sql?

It should be done on the primary base prior to the instantiation.
It can be done now if you put the standby in recovery mode.

You have to shutdown and restart the standby database but the whole process depends on your Oracle version, if you use DataGuard or not to manage your standby database, the way archived log are propagated to standby server and so on.
I advice you to read documentation on standby database before doing any thing.
