It might be a good idea to explicitly point people to the stickies in the Newbie forum when they confirm their registration.
If there would be a (short) description on what is in there, people just might follow the links to the documentation, preventing yet another RTFM-post.
Also, chances will increase that people will follow the posting-guidelines..

Good point, Frank! And an indication that the main forum is in English, not Urdu, not IM, would be nice too.

Excellent idea, Frank. Other groups do similar things. When I joined some Yahoo groups, I got a welcome email, full of links with brief descriptions, which suggested that they be read prior to posting, in order to become familiar with guidelines and expected etiquette, and avoid asking questions that had already been answered. You can't expect newbies to know all that in advance or happen to look in the right place. It could save a lot of grief for them and us.

Just for a laugh, could we create an IM forum in the foreign language section and see if we get any hits?

A possible extension / modification of this same idea would be, rather than showing them a page with a link to the sticky, simply taking them to the main newbie sticky directly, as the first page you see after you register. Or a page just like it.
