Hi Frns,

I need u r suggestions. Assume that i have data in Oracle 10g database server and my requirement is that i wanted to make the data as downward compatible with oracle 8i database. Any anyone give some inputs.

if you want to transfer data from oracle 8i to oracle 10g.
then use original import or export utilities.
it is better option for you.

Correct term is 'backward compatible'.
IMHO, data is just data. In most cases Data is just compatible.
But not the options/features/code that is using the data.
What particular options/feautres are you looking into?
For example you may want to stick to 8i based CBO options.

Please be advised that, setting compatible to a lower version disables many vital features in higher version
and should be done only with advice from OSS.

But, i you want to 'downgrade' the database from 10g to 8i ( as opposed to 'upgrade')
then export/import method explained by User52 should work.
Beware that upgrade/downgrade using export/import will work good only if the database is simple without any advanced options. Because with these you just moving the data (and associated code) around.
You are NOT really 'upgrading' the code. Some pl/sql coding features may not be available in lower versions and vice-versa.

I hope someone other than Frns is allowed to answer. And I am not quite sure what type of suggestion a u r is, but...

You do know of course that you must use the exp from the lower version of the database if you are planning to move it from 10g to 8i.
