Yes, you can (actually, you should be able to) if you configure the network access.

As you didn't mention which Oracle version and Operating system you use, from my point of view, use Net Configuration Assistant (can be found among Configuration and Migration Tools) - it should set everything up in order to enable you to connect to the remote database.

I am using Oracle 8.1.7 client and server 8.1.7. here are the steps i followed to configure.
1. Open net configuration assistant
2. Local net service name configuration
3. Choosen Add
4. Choosen 8i or later database
5. Service name which is created on the remote database.
6. Protocal
7. Host name and port name (default port 1521)
8. choosen yes perform test
9. I got the error here as follows:

ORA-12541 : TNS:No listner
The test did not succeed

Let me know if I need to do any thing more on the server and the client side.

Thanks for your response.

hi
you have to check the following condition
and see what applies to your problem.

1. you should check the network.
2. you should try ip address instead of hostname
3. check the lan cards and cables on the both sides
4. check in the services if the service " Oracle tnslistner" is running.if it is not showing the status "started" then right click on the service and click start.

if these are not the problems
then you have to create the the listner again

drop the existing listner
and create another using net8 assistant or dba studio

if you have any query please reply this message.

hi

if it doesn't work
please check on the client side if
firewall is on then turn it off.
i you have an antivirus which shows you firewall off but in real the firewall is on then it is necessary to uninstall that antivirus.

i suffered this problem with panada antivirus.

second try to restart your listener service in the control pannel administrative tool services

i hope now it will work.

I have done what you have said but still I am not able to connect. Even though I restarted the listner on the server I am getting the same error saying that "TNS: No listner".
I could ping that machine.

Thanks,
