What is your goal here? Why not just backup all of the software and then restore it as one complete set?

I am trying to do a flash backup for a disaster recovery test. I want the $ORACLE_HOME minimized as much as possible for the flash backup.

I can understand the thought behind that, but would view it as too risky to implement in production, especially in a disaster recovery situation. In that type of case I would want things to be as exactly close to production as possible, without worrying about anything being different if I could help it.

Plus I wouldn't want to have to keep up and/or guess as to changes made during any patches or new releases by Oracle.

Basically in my view there wouldn't be a space savings that I'd consider to be worth it. Especially with the larger capacity available in portable media.

Are you trying to do a "Disaster Recovery" or "Save a tape" operation...?

Backup the COMPLETE $ORACLE_HOME folder (or /u01 mount ). I have my /u01 mount of $ORACLE_HOME (for Oracle 9.2 EE) at around 4 GB. And this going to tape, which are not that expensive these days...

Better to be safe than sorry.
