Ok i need a bit of clarification.
5th January - A backup is made of the data on a database running Oracle 9.2.0.1
15th January - The database is then upgraded to version 9.2.0.5
Can the tape made on 5th of january be used to restore teh database now running 9.2.0.5?

It depends on what kind of backup you took.
Export from previous version can be imported on new version database.
Instead, if you backed up datafiles and control files..mmm. I don't know, it might work, but i don't know what consequences could be.
I believe that upgrades from 9.2.x.x to 9.2.y.y only updates data in specific dictionary tables and internal packages and things like that. Besides, it updates some oracle binaries files.
Hope it helps.
