I've just started a new job and inherited responsibility for a couple of 10g (rel 1) databases on Tru64 unix hosts. The init.ora files of these databases contain the parameters in the following format ....

<ORACLE_SID>.parameter = value

or

*.parameter = value

also some of the parameters are prefixed with an underscore (_) - I know this is a 'hidden' parameter but they seem to occur with normal documented parameters eg _db_cache_size

I've had a (brief) look through the Oracle docs etc but can't find any mention of these formats - can anyone shed some light?

This syntax was introduced to support any instance in a RAC.
