How can i know what's going on in the database ? whenever user ask me this question i usually query two table to see locks & long runnig statements in v$locked_object & v$session_longops where time_remaining > 0. what other views i can query to know what else is going on in system ?

Use statspack to make snapshots during eg. a peek periode and watch the spreport output for high consuming SQL and spread of IO activity in datafiles. Futhermore wait events tell you what the system is wating for.
for 10g use AWR through the dbconsole og the grid console if you got it installed.
