I've inherited a 9i database with odd things in the backup script (Like taking the database in and out of archivelog mode) but the one I'm really puzzled over is that they are backing up rollback segments. I would have thought this unecessary. Please enlighten me.

In 9i , the databae is supposed to make use of Undo Tablespace.
And You NEED to backup undo ( when you issue BACKUP DATABASE it is automatically done).
Without undo you ***may*** have problems during recovery.
