what is the difference between clone database and stand-by database ?.
both databases maintains a duplicate copy of our primary database and provides continued availability in the event of a disaster.

There may not be a difference, or it may just be a terminology thing. A stand by database is a specific oracle feature / function that is provided through Data Guard as either a Logical Standby Database or a Physical Standby Database.

A clone, to me at least, is a more generic and general term that could have any number of definitions / meanings to different people in different environments. When I think clone though I think "exact copy", which would mean a physical standby, or possibly a restoration of a production database to a test server before and until any changes were made to production.
