I am no longer able to log on to SQLPlus 8.0 as I am receiving the message:

ORA-01033 ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress

I am running Oracle 9.2 on Windows XP from a standalone PC & logging on as system.

I have rebooted & also stop/started the services but I'm still receiving the error

Can you please help? I'm new to this so the more simple the explanation the better.

hi,

Do one thing restart you PC
Frankly saying when you will do this your oracle.exe will be killed. and when computer starts try to connect to the oracle.
thats it..

Check alert log and observe the last few lines in that for possible cause of delay/hanging of database start/stop process.

Your perhaps could:

sqlplus
sys / as sysdba
<no password needed>
shutdown abort

Or control C or kill in task manager, the shutdown process that is running, then do a shutdown abort.
