Hi

Hope to find everyone in best of health and mood!

I have to create a functional index on a column (Varchar2(400)). but due to DB_BLOCK_SIZE size limit we can't.
it needs 16k and we have 8k size.

We have 8.1.7.4 Oracle database

1) Is there any way we can create index
2) Can we go for ORACLE TEXT, what will be its implications
3) What will happen to this when we migrate to oracle 9i.

p.s. there will be regularlarly updates on this index.

Thanks and regards
Puneet

9i does allow having tablespaces with different block sizes. So you should be facing any such issue, if you migrate & then create the Functiona based index.

Hi Grish,

Thanks for your answer.

Is there any way we can have functional index on column
(Varchar2(4000)) though DB_BLOCK_SIZE size is 8k instead of 16K

what is the alternative, we need to create an index.

Also I was going through the Oracle Text, it says

ctxsrv
You use the ctxsrv server daemon for background DML processing. You can start it from the command line or with the interMedia Text Manager administration tool.

This server synchronizes the index with ALTER INDEX at regular intervals.

How we can automate this, if we go for this option.

I don't understand why you can't create an index on varchar2(400) with an 8k block size?

Oh, you meant 4000 not 400. But still it works for me? Im in 10g, but why would that make a difference?

Hi smartin

Thanks for you help

When we try to create functional index on column 4000 with DB block size 8k , its giving error.

So if you know any alternative please let me know.

Also I found there is one alternative creating oracle text but it says

ctxsrv
You use the ctxsrv server daemon for background DML processing. You can start it from the command line or with the interMedia Text Manager administration tool.

This server synchronizes the index with ALTER INDEX at regular intervals.

How we can automate this, if we go for this option.
