You can monitor or say just look around a database pretty good if you have select any dictionary privilege.The best free tool I assume comes from Oracle itself. Use the Oracle Enterprise Manager however connect to local box (DBA studio).You dont need to put a repository for that.

You could then login to the database under tree structure and look around its status, parameters, SGA, UNDO segments. Under storage, you can see the status of all the tablespaces etc.You can see who login to the database and which queries are taking the resources. If you have the privilege, dba studio gives the best info about killing a seesion.

Look around and you will find a lot to play.

dba studio sometimes is useful for beginner
