Hi

Currently we have Ultra 60 as our Oracle server.

As the machine has been giving problem, we are planning to purchase a better machine.

I like to know whether it is better to get Sun Fire 240 server to serve as a oracle server.

I see Sun Blade 1500 having almost same CPU power and memory.

I like to know which one of the above (server vs workstation) can better serve as a oracle server.

Any input on this will be really helpful.

Thanks
Nirai

I have no idea which is better, if any, for your situation.

But in addition to raw cpu speed and total RAM, you will also want to consider bandwidth, meaning the rate at which the server can read/use data in RAM. Also disk throughput, how fast the server can send data out to write and receive data in to read from whatever disk drives or system you attach.

For example, it is great to have 12 gig of ram, but if your server must process data through it at 1mb a sec, then that will be your limiting factor.

Someone who works in hardware may have more in-depth info for you, but those are the basic ideas. Each server part has a quantity and an individual speed, but must also factor the speed with which the different parts communicate.
