I've been tasked to upgrade our current Oracle 8i database from version 8.1.7.0 to 8.1.7.4. This is a production database. Can anyone provide me with pointers on how best to approach this?

Download the patch-set and associated README file from Metalink. The README file will contain detailed installation steps.
