hai,

we have written a shell script to delete old archived log files that is older that recent 60 days and executed the same to avoid archiver error. is it ok to delete old archived logs older than recent 60 days..?plz suggest.

It is ok to delete old archivelogs.
But, why 60 days??!!.
and are you backing all these everyday? again and again?.

thanks for ur response.

we are not taking daily backup of the archived log files.in that case , how many days beyond shall we delete those files..?i.e instead of 60 what is advisable..?

Depends on your local retention policy.

EveryTime you backup the database, always backup archived logs also. A good backup should always have datafiles,archivedlogs,controlfile and spfile.
This backupset(s) all will go under one tag something like backup_taken_on_that_day.

Once backup is done, you can remove all the archived logs ( that are backed up).
If your backuppolicy is to retain atleast 3 backups locally,
then all you need is to have 3 sets of backups locally. THe rest can be removed. (to be in safer side, you can have all the archived logs that are created between these 3 backups locally, and rest can be removed. BUt this is just redundant, as your RMAN backups already have these archivedlogs).

THere is no standard policy here.
If you can afford to have all archived logs locally have it!.
