Hi jerry,
Lets give us one more try from my side. Anyways dnt haste to reinstall Oracle cos there are some big gurus on this site and they r definitely going to help u out.
Meanwhile try my solution,
Startup & shutdown ur database manually .
After starting ur machine , login as sysdba and
SQL > startup
before shutting down ur machine , login as sysdba and
SQL> shutdown
( provided no other user is connected to the database otherwise it will wait for the users to disconnect )
Check this out, it might help u.
regards,
tarun

Use shutdown immediate instead of normal shutdown in that case, when other users are connected & you want to shutdown database quickly & also maintain its consistency.
Meanwhile do check one thing... is your database in archive log mode & automatic archiving is enabled?
