hi,

Can any one briefly tell me what is upgradation of oracle 8i to 9i .... well i had one offer of job from good indian company they told me the work is to upgarde database from oracle 8i to 9i .... what exactly it is .... does this mean i have to migrate database from oracle 8i to oracle 9i ... or it is something else...

Yes, I think so. Upgrade is like a migrate except that instead of moving the database from one server to another you are keeping the database in the same place but simply increasing it from version 8i to 9i (or 9i to 10g, etc). I think it is just a matter of confusion of the terminology or the meaning of the word. I guess you could use the word migrate also, but an upgrade is a migrate that doesn't go anywhere or change anything other than the version of the database. You could even use the word upgrade to describe going from 10.1.0.2 to 10.1.0.4. Just any increase in version.

If the position is a DBA position and you aren't familiar with database upgrades - don't even think of taking it. If it's a developer position, then it would most likely mean that the application is being made to work in 9i. No database upgrade experience is require for the latter - just general Oracle programming skills...

hi,

First of all i will like to thanks smartin and andrew who had devoted their precious time for my question... but i have little confusion ....

[1] To upgrade from 8i to 9i do i need hard core Oracle programming skill ... (i.e. is it work of developer to make application run on new version of oracle)?
Note:- i can develop package trigger procedure function etc.

OR

[2] To upgrade from 8i to 9i do i have to install 9i on same server on which 8i is present and then i have to move data from 8i to 9i?

OR

[3] I HAVE TO DO BOTH (i.e 1 & 2)

Can i get any link on internet to study regarding the upgradation from 8i to 9i then please send me i will be greatful to you.

the employer needs to specify what skills are required and what the role is. The description "upgrade 8i to 9i" could refer to a DBA role or a developer role. It to too vague to answer.

HI

Yes, you do need to install 9i. Now installation depends on employer, if he allows you to have different box for installation or makes you install on same machine.
