Hi,
I have several clients that are currently running Oracle Database 8.1.6. I would like to upgrade them to 8.1.7. Updating the DB server will be no problem. However, do I also need to update the client machines with Client version 8.1.7 or can they continue to function on 8.1.6?

My goal is to upgrade all clients to 8.1.7 in preparation for an upgrade to 10g later on this year.

Upgrade to 10g directly ( or atleast 9i)

I know it's dead. However, I can upgrade directly to 10g from 8.1.7 and I'd like to at least get all of my clients on the same DB platform (and it's also the least amount of hassle). Do I need to install the 8.1.7 client if I'm upgrading the DB from 8.1.6 to 8.1.7?

Depends on what you are doing.
all sql commands should work.
you may need to do some minor workarounds when using utilities like exp/imp.

Our application really only uses the tnsnames.ora and the Oracle ODBC for Windows to connect to the database server. I don't believe there will be a big difference with Net8 properties between the two versions, so I think using the 8.1.6 ODBC to connect to the 8.1.7 database will be fine...it's a very basic client setup. Thanks for your help.
