Hi,
We are using Oracle 8i with Devloper 6i on XP.
We are planning to move to Oracle 9i and to Developer 9i.
I believe upgrading Oracle 8i to Oracle 9i is not a problem. Is this true? What problems can we face here?
Also can we use Developer 6i with oracle 9i?
I believe the tool Flint can be used to convert froms/reports from Devleoper 6i to Developer 9i. How dependable is the tool?
Thanks & Regards,
Shailaja

Hi David,
Thanks for the reply.
Basically we are on Developer 6i & Oracle 8i.
If upgrading from Oracle 8i to 10 g is more easier, does Developer 6i work with Oracle 10g?(The reason I am asking this question is we can upgrade oracle 8i to Oracle 10g as soon as possible and start looking at upgrading Dveloper 6i to 9i later because I believe that takes a lot of time).

Shailaja

David,
Thanks for the information.
I have got a question about Oracle 10g now. I am not sure if I can ask about it in this forum.
Our database server is on 8i now. Now if I want load Oracle 10g on this server, can we do that using only this server. Or do we need multiple servers? If we can use only one server, is it going to be effiicent?
Regards,
Shailaja

I am not an expert on database topics. However, as long as the server satisfies the requirements for 10g then I see no reason why you can't have both installed at the same time.
I assume that you will be moving the 8 data to the 10 database and then ultimately dropping the 8 environment.
You may have some resource limitations if you try to run everyone on both systems at the same time, but that would happen if you tried to run two 8 databases on the same hardware at the same time.
Try it and see. Remember that an 8 database can be upgraded to 10, you don't have to export and then import the data into the new 10 database.

Then you will need a reasonable size server.
This is MY opinion only, everyone else can give their experience, but about 1.5GHz of processing, single processor, maybe a dual, 2G RAM, standard disk. I suggest Linux (reboot weekly) but MS Server can probably handle it (reboot daily).
