Hi!

From yesturday our oracle server gives us this error.
We tried to restart the database, and restart the machine too.
File system checked for alert.log file, but it has no new entries (only entries from 2004).
Could you give some tips what should we check, or what could we do?
We would really appreciate that.

HI

This error comes up when the instance get terminated abnormally.
Alert log needs to be checked for this, but since in ur case, no new entry is there in alert log...
Pls check for the following:
1. value for background_dump_dest in init.ora file.
2. permissions on directory and alert.log file as specified in init.ora parameter background_dump_dest.

Also pls provide info on these:
1. R u giving the command as "startup" or with some options like "nomount" or "mount" etc.
2. At which stage of startup the error is getting displayed.

checked the background_dump_dest variable, created the directory and we have permission to alert.log too.
starting with enterprise manager one of the databases:
we can mount it, and in the open - it gives the same error
(i thougth it was the oracle server that we start, but it's a database, sorry)

Now check the alert.log file and u will get the actual reason there for this error.
