Hi everyone

I want to know that what is the value we can set for both the log_buffer and redo files which is good from every corner.

database oracle8.1.7.4 on solaris 9

If there was one setting that was good for all situations then oracle company would not make it a setting for us to use and alter, they would make it a hard coded piece of the oracle code.

In other words, there is no such thing.

Hi,

It is true that there is no such fixed value whcih we can use for optimal performance. But there are some thumb of rules which we can follow to get the better performance.

On most of the platforms the default value of LOG_BUFFER which is 512 or 128 * number of CPU (whichever is greater) is enough and the size of log files is totally depends on the workload and recovery time(checkpoint). Mostly in busy systems also the checkpoint should occur at a gap of around 20 mins but again its not a fixed time it totaly depends on the MTTR of your system.

According to me we should follow these kinds of rules to start.
