Did you try re-starting your computer? If that doesn't work, here are a few things to check:

Try checking to see that you have enough space in memory and hard drive. Have you installed anything recently that took more space or added too much data for the space that you have? Have you changed anything in Oracle recently, especially in your parameter files? How were you trying to connect when you received the errors? Does it happen when you connect to any account? Were you logged in as a different operating system user than usual?

Yes, I restarted my computer but it didnt work.
I have 256 MB of RAM and almost 4 GB free space on the drive.
neither I have installed something nor have changed any parameter files.
I tried to conn scott/tiger. But before connecting when windows2000 starts it also shows the message.
I am connecting as usual account.

Do you get a shared memory realm error or anything similar when you try to run things other than Oracle? I am asking this in order to try to determine whether the problem is related only to Oracle or to your computer in general. You might also try one more re-start, wait a few minutes to make sure that Oracle has had sufficient time to start the database, shut down anything else, including e-mail and internet stuff, that might be consuming resources, then see if you still have the problem. I have received this message on occasion myself and was able to resolve it by freeing disk space and memory. Sometimes, there are things consuming memory, such as automatic McAfee and other updates, while you are connected to the Internet.

All other programs on my PC are running smoothly. The PC is not connected to the internet neither have installed antivirus on. I have tried to restart the computer about 7 times and have waited enough to start all services.. but the problem remains.

Hi,
You have just to open a DOS session and type
svrmgrL
connect system/<system's password>@ <db name> as sysdba
startup

After these commands your database is available and you can use Sql+ for example to connect to your database.

If you're running Oracle 8.1.7 then you might need to upgrade to 8.1.7.4 (fix release). I had a similar problem with shared memory, and that was a known problem in that version. Now I'm having the same problem as you... (But I don't have that update release here...)

I just had the same problem, we have oracle 9i installed. We put more RAM in the server and it fixed the problem. I would shutdown all not needed services on your PC to free up memory. Our problem came about after adding a database thus creating too large of a memory load.

No no no, the simple solution (if you are running 8.1.7.1 to .3) is to install 8.1.7.4, which currects this known BUG. Hope it helps.

We are running 9i so that doesn't apply, either way it fixed the problem.

I got the similar problem, when I tried to configure domain controller and then install oracle 8i.....
The solution we tried is configure the server in workgoup mode and install oracle 8i...it works fine...or as one of the gentleman suggested...in case of above problem you can start the database in DOS mode svrmgrl program and manual database startup....

Hopefully we should try using oracle 8.1.7.4 upgrade version....

Where/what is this svrmgrL? What is the exact syntax to run it? I tried to run it in dos, but it can't find it. I am running Oracle 9i on Windows 2000 SP 4.

Many thanks!

PS - This issue came up for me after running dbms_stats.
