For your data field, access the Properties sheet and in the 'Data' section there is a class of 'Data Type'. Change this from 'Char' to 'Aplha'.
I have the impression that you are using Windows as your front end. Go to 'My Computer', right click and select Properties. On the tab marked Advanced there is a button marked 'Environment Variables', make sure that 'TEMP' and 'TMP' are both defined and they point to an area to which you have 'update' authority eg %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
