I am trying to backup a controlfile under OS/390 8.1.7.3.50 and I am getting ORA-1580 with an associated ORA-4101 (errorid - 1067) and ORA-1587 with associated ORA-27091. I have changed the ORA$FPS parameters many times to no avail.

Loren,
we backup controlfile to trace under 8.1.7.2.50 with no problems. We did have a few RACF and SMS problems in the early days but it does seem to work o.k.
We put our traces to a dataset via the
TRACE_DSNAME(ORAr.TRACE.&ORASESST..T&LYYMMDD..T&LHHMMSS)parameter.
I've tried at 8.1.7.3 and that seems o.k as well

Thanks Paul,
I can backup the control file to trace okay it is when I try to backup the control file to a file is when I am having problems. I found the note about the trace_dsname entry in the note from Oracle and fixed that problem. We think that when I was testing some RMAN stuff that we might have done something to the control file and are going to try to re-create them.
Thanks again
Loren
