Segmentation is used in relation to Customer Relationship Management (CRM). It allows you to define who a customer is at a fine level of granularity.
In the data warehouse you define mutually exclusive collections of records that share similar attributes.
The best place to start researching this topic is to read up on CRM and also there are some great data warehousing books by Ralph Kimball and published by Wiley that will tell you how to go about implementing segmentation within the data warehouse. Happy hunting!
