Can anybody tell me what is the difference between character based and Gui application.

Friend,
Character based application is old concept. It is DOS based. Mouse could not be used here. So not user friendly. C,C++,BASIC,PASCAL etc used to develope this kind of software. UNIX is a chracter based OS. Advantage is its fast speed and low hardware requiremt.
On the other hand,GUI is mordern concept. Main reson for the popularity of windows is its GUI. It is user friendly. Visual tools like mouse pointer, icon, grapgics, pic used in GUI system. ORACLE developer, VB etc used for this type of developement. Its Disadvantage is slow, high hadrware requirment.
