My friend is trying to install portal and the installer ask him for a "sys" password, now that usually points to the oracle sys password but when he trys it, he gets an invalid login. He hasn't changed the default password on the database and this is installed on an NT machine using Database version 8.1.7 and 9iAS ? any thoughts ? He was also told to use a separate oracle_home for his install of 9ias.

on technet there is a step by step guide on installing 9ias on 8.1.7 there is also a patch that needs to be installed. You do not need two separate homes, the patch fixes this.
