In the user's guide and references, it is said that oracle does

not support floating point coordinate unless it's point data.

But when I tried to enter floating point coordinates into some

SDO_GEOMETRY it works, and I could even get floating point

result from a "select intersection" query.

Can anyone give me an explaination?

Yes, SDO_GEOMETRY coordinates are stored as a "floating point" number. However, you may not get a fractional answer if you set the precision too small.
