For some reason, when attempting to log into my database I am getting the following error

"Error: [[SERVERERROR]] ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress"

I know i need to perform a forced shutdown(?), but have no idea how to actually do this!!

I am using Oracle9.2 on a win2k platform. Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

goto control panel/services.
select the oraclesid service.
in the properties, make the autostart false or make it manual.
reboot the sytem.
after the reboot start the service(s). if everything is ok, then make the service to autostart again.

Thanks for the reply, I have tried what you described but am still getting the same error.

Any other ideas?

please refer the alert log in your BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST
and post the messages.
did u ever set your ORACLE_SID in the machine?
or have multiple databases in the same machine?

If you are getting the error immediately after starting your machine, this is normal and is because it is initializing (starting) Oracle. It can't log you in while it is starting. If so, wait a few minutes, then try again, and see if it is done.
