I am a bit new in DB administration.

just wanted to take backup of my oracle 8.0.5 DB usinf export utility.
but read some where that database should be in asynchronous mode for export.
i have no idea about what asynchronous is.
how to check it ? or how to put db to this mode.

Regards,

asynchronous means that the db must be in consistent mode i.e if you can afford to shutdown the db and start it in restriected session, then the db will comes into the consistent mode

hope it will help you out

to add what sunil has said,
oracle export wont capture the changes that happens during the export ( unless you do an incremental export later).
using export for backup is one of the options.
export is just the logical backup of the database w.r.t
a point of time.
