If Oracle8i/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/bin/orapwd exists then I would say your environment variables are not set or are incorrect. Make sure you have

PATH (including $ORACLE_HOME/bin)
ORACLE_HOME="Oracle8i/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7"
ORACLE_SID=
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/usr/lib"
SHLIB_PATH="$ORACLE_HOME/lib"

I have the same exact problem with dbassist on Linux platform. The dialog says 1% and hangs. The step that never completes is the starting of an Oracle instance. I need help getting past this problem.

Hi,

Do we need to install any patches before installing oracle 8.1.7 on sun solaris 8 (sun sparc machine)?

Kindly provide the details for the same.

Thanks and Regards,
Dileep Dharma

I was getting same problem.
When I checked in $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory
(The location where it was searching the
file) for orapwd file , it was not there but
another file with the similar name 'orapwdO'
was available.I renamed this 'orapwdO' file
to 'orapwd' file and evrything worked fine.
