Connection timeout with TNS-12571 [message #66564]

My net8 connections get disconnected after about 15 mins of inactivity, and I get a ORA-12571 TNS:packet writer failure. The SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME parameter is not set in the sqlnet.ora file, so I would expect my connections to last forever.

server: Oracle 8.1.7 on SuSE Linux 7.3.
client: NT4 using 8.1.7 client.

Any help appreciated, as this is really winding me up.

hi,

i think it will not the problem.in your user profile
they will set the idel time for 15 minutes.net8 connections get disconnected after about 15 mins of inactivity.so increase the idle time for the user profile.

Hi,

I've checked the user profile and the idle time value is set to unlimited. I've tried setting it to 60, but I still get disconnected way before that.

SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME is used for Dead Connection Detection and has nothing to do with disconnecting clients. This parameter will kill Oracle server processes that no longer have a client connection. Do you have software installed that disconnects your session if it gets no I/O in 15 minutes?

Solved! the database server in question is in a DMZ (behind a firewall) and the firewall was disconnecting me. Thanks for the hint.
