We have 2.5 gb ram(soalris 7)oracle version is old(7.3.4).while batch jobs running it consumes temporary tablespace very much aroun 500mb.I set sort_Area_size =6mb and increased to 64mb didnt gave any performance improvemment.While shuting down the database after the batch jobs its hanged for 7 minutes.Is there any relation between these

"SORT_AREA_SIZE" configuration should not affect shutdown time. If just a regular "SHUTDOWN" command is being used, then it is possible that the database has some open connections and is just waiting for those connections to log out.
